Our 2018 robotics season has come to an end! At the first competition we competed in, the ONT District Windsor Essex Great Lakes event, we placed 19th out of 36 teams after 74 qualification matches. When it came to choosing alliances, we were chosen by team 6544 and 4992. We competed in the quarterfinals, but were unfortunately eliminated in this round.
At our second competition in London, the ONT District Western University, Western Engineering Event, we placed 4th out of 38 teams after 76 qualification matches. We asked teams 5426 and 5483 to be in our alliance. Once again we were eliminated in the quarterfinals. We placed 82nd out of the 157 teams in the Ontario district, making us unable to move on to the district championships. The team made countless, fun memories and is proud of the successes we accomplished throughout this season. A big thanks goes out to all of our friends and families who granted us the overwhelming support. As always, we're looking forward to next year's season!

With plenty of new recruits to this year's team, we're back and ready to approach the upcoming challenges FRC throws at us. So far, we've taken the time to introduce our new teammates to their chosen departments, and it looks like everyone is settling in perfectly! With a great start to the year, we're looking at a series of competitions just as amazing.
The new release has left our team in a determined, work-hard mood. We took the first 2 days of build to do nothing but strategize, go through the rules, and gather our thoughts, and it's payed off. We're further ahead in our design than we've ever been at this point of previous build seasons. Our programming team is updating all of the software, and everyone else is cleaning/organizing the robotics room. This season is off to a good start, and we're going to do our best to make sure it keeps going this way.
Thank you so much to all of FIRST's sponsors, we love this year's KOP. And of course, we'd like to thank FIRST, for putting so much effort into this year's game, and giving our students the amazing oppourtunities that come with robotics. It's the New Year, and we're counting down the days to kickoff. In 5 days and 22 hours our team will be meeting up to find out what exactly FIRST meant when they said, "take flight," in the Steamworks teaser video. As always, we meet the new season with wonder, excitement, and a little anxiety. Our team has made a lot of changes over the course of the pre-season, but we knows it's all for the better. Please look forward to seeing our team grow even more this season, and cheer us on!
As always, competitions, mock or real, come with some difficulties and lessons, as well as lots of fun. Last Saturday's competition was a great opportunity for our newer students to see what FIRST is all about. We set them all on a job with either scouting or pit crew, and each grew and learned, as a member of our team. It was pretty fun to watch, honestly.
Now on to tomorrow morning, a couple of our members will attend team 771's SWATposium. There, we will lead a workshop about Increasing Student Initiative and Individual Responsibility, in the afternoon. Hope to see you there! With the St.Clair preseason event drawing nearer, we make our final adjustments to last year's program and robot. Our seniors have hyped up and prepared the new students. The schedule for Saturday is posted below. Wish us luck!
After a hot and restful summer, many of our teammates are charged up and ready for the pre-season events and 2017 season preparation. Updates and team progress will be posted as we go. We're all set to welcome new additions to the team and keep moving forward as a team!
Worlds was an amazing and busy opportunity. Many of our team took advantage of seminars and team socials, such as the cupcake social. We were lucky enough to forge bonds with teams from Israel, Mexico, Czech Republic, and Hawaii. Google's contributions to the competition made everything even more memorable, with specially made safety glasses. Our team made sure to also visit the hard-working FLL teams from all over the world. With our team's minimal free time, we visited the St. Louis City Museum. It was hard for some of us to leave, it was so much high-energy fun. Our senior teammates knew that going to the Innovation Faire was a necessary part of the FIRST championships, so time was made for that too. Finally, we sat on the edge of our chairs as we watched the Einstein championships. The tied score in the final seconds of the last match had us holding our breaths, and cheering for our Canadian alliance-mates from Windsor: 2056, OP Robotics. Though OP's alliance did not win the day, they did show incredible team work and gracious professionalism. Their opposing alliance worked hard for their win, and have every right to be proud. Congratulations to every team that participated at the 2016 FIRST championships, we hope to see you again!

We started off practice matches and qualifiers with little robot malfunctions or problems, and even held 17th place for a short amount of time. One change that helped us was that our programming team created two new autonomous programs so we could kick off each match confidently. Once again, our safety captain won "Star of the Day," as well as being offered a position as a safety trainee for future FRC competitions. Our scouters (and parent scouters!) worked hard, and remained very spirited, with painted faces and loud cheers, through the whole competition. As always, networking happened, and our team made sure to keep our team relations strong by befriending a Polish team and an international school's team, as well as several other American and Canadian teams. We made sure to offer help and friendly advice every time we met a rookie team. Our school rival, St. Annes, actually competed well and held 1st place for a time, despite being a rookie team.
On our final day, we woke knowing that we were placed 40th, and realized that if we didn't make good use of our last 3 matches, we wouldn't even see finals. In our first morning match, we paired with OP Robotics(2056) and MMRambotics(2200), to create a new competition high score of 170. The next two matches didn't score as high, but did push us up to 22nd place before alliance selection. Despite being in the top 24, many teams did not get chosen for an alliance. As selections progressed, our team began to believe we were also going to be one of them. At the very end, the first seed alliance (2056 and 910) made their final pick. They chose us. From there, finals were a whirlwind of cheering, suspense, excitement. We broke the high score twice, with scores of 200, then 205. Until championship matches, no one could get past our alliance's mix of defense and powerful offense. During the middle of our first championship match, our scaling arms started to extend without any command, and our shooter jammed. There was nothing our driver could do but park the robot at the base of the tower, as we lost our first match. The next match was close. As time ran out, the scoreboard said we'd lost, but we held our breath, because we knew that our alliance had scaled, and breached more defenses, but had no idea if that was enough to win. Then they revealed the final score, and we became overjoyed to find that we had won. The final match was incredible. Our driver pushed the bot to play offense, then switched over to defense and blocked at least three shots, then returned to offense and shot several high goals, and finally challenged the tower as our alliance scaled. In the last couple of seconds, we had the higher score and won! As soon as the championship matches are archived online, I will post the link. It was beyond incredible, and we're all proud of our driver and whole team. Thank you to our amazing alliance, OP robotics and Foley Freeze, our supportive mentors and parents, and our generous sponsors. (Especially Valiant, for the celebratory post-competition dinner!) Now, we have the opportunity to go to St. Louis championships for the second year in a row, this time by our own success. Championships will take place from April 27th to Apr 30th. Fundraising and other preparations start tomorrow! |
